Bolsa Chica
West-facing beachbreak running the length of Bolsa Chica State Beach in Huntington. Sand bottom. Combo south and west swell window — the wave that turns on when both come in together.
Spot intel
Parking
$15 day-use at the Bolsa Chica State Beach entrance off Pacific Coast Highway. Long oceanfront lot, lots of capacity. Free street parking on the inland side of PCH.
Crowd
Spread along the beach length. Surf schools and learners cluster at the south end nearer the pier. The lot makes the wave accessible enough that summer afternoons fill in.
Beginner-friendly?
Yes.
Sand-bottom beachbreak, forgiving wave shape, lifeguarded state beach with a flat lot-to-sand walk. The catches are summer crowd density and along-shore current, not the wave.
Lineup etiquette
Beachbreak priority is per-wave, not by lineup position. A wave already taken from the peak isn't open to paddle into.
When it's on
Combo south through southwest and west through west-northwest groundswell with light offshore wind from the northeast through east. Mid-tide window.
When beginners can paddle out
Knee-high to chest-high on any tide with light wind. The south end runs softer and is where less experienced surfers paddle out.
