County Line

Point, reef, and beachbreak peaks spread along the cove at Yerba Buena Beach, right on the Ventura and LA county line in full view of PCH. Kelp and a rock-and-cobble bottom groom both summer south swell and winter west.

Spot intel

Parking

Free roadside parking on the dirt shoulder along PCH directly above the beach. It is a highway shoulder, so doors open into traffic. Fills out on summer weekends.

Crowd

Moderate and spread. The peaks stretch along the cove so the pack rarely stacks on one takeoff. Weekend PCH traffic brings a steady mix of longboarders and shortboarders from both counties.

Beginner-friendly?

Depends.

On small days the outside peaks roll in soft and the crowd spreads out, which suits a confident novice on a bigger board. The bottom is rock and cobble rather than sand, and the kelp thickens seasonally, so it rewards surfers who can already steer.

Famous for

County Line. The checkpoint wave of the PCH drive between LA and Ventura, readable from the driver’s seat, with Neptune’s Net across the highway. One of the most-surfed stretches on that run of coast.

Lineup etiquette

Where the wave points up, the deepest rider has priority. On the open beach peaks, closest to the peak has the wave. Longboards and shortboards share the same water here.

When it’s on

South through southwest groundswell on the summer side, west through northwest on the winter side. Light offshore from the northeast through east. Mid tide window.
