Devereux
Mushy right point off Coal Oil Point at the UCSB campus in Isla Vista. A slow, forgiving wall that breaks on the rock shelf and softens after the first section. Works on west swell when the harder Channel points stay flat.
Spot intel
Parking
Pay-by-plate lots at the Coal Oil Point Reserve and the UCSB lagoon, a short walk to the wave on a posted trail. Campus parking is enforced through the work week.
Crowd
Moderate, and heavily UCSB students, many of them learning. Spreads across the point on a workable swell.
Beginner-friendly?
Yes.
A slow, mushy point wave with a forgiving wall and a student-heavy lineup. The catches are the kelp and the boulders on the inside, not the wave.
Lineup etiquette
Priority goes to the deepest rider, but the wave is mellow enough that the shoulder stays open.
When it's on
Solid west swell with light offshore from the north. The point wants size to hold a steeper face past the first section.
When beginners can paddle out
Waist-high to chest-high west swell on a mid tide with light wind. Watch the boulders on the inside at low tide and keep a leash clear of the kelp.
