Spot intel

Parking

Free and metered street parking along Seacoast Drive and the residential blocks east of the pier. Small public lots at Dunes Park and the foot of the pier. The 5 runs the length of the county to get here.

Crowd

Moderate, denser at the peaks adjacent to the pier. Local crew presence is strong; tourist density runs lower than the spots north up the coast.

Beginner-friendly?

Depends.

Sand-bottom shape is approachable on small days. The catches are the pier pilings, the cross-shore current pushing up from the Tijuana River mouth, and chronic water-quality closures — county public-health beach advisories and full closures around the river plume are common, especially after rain. Cold-water full suits are standard most of the year.

Lineup etiquette

Beachbreak priority is per-wave, not by lineup position. Stay clear of the pilings. The local crew rotates the inside peaks.

When it's on

South or southwest groundswell with a working northwest swell. Light offshore wind from the east. Mid-tide window.

When beginners can paddle out

Knee-high to waist-high on any tide with light wind, well clear of the pier pilings. Check the San Diego County beach water-quality advisory before paddling out — Tijuana River sewage runoff drives frequent closures along this stretch.
