Pismo Pier
South-facing sand-bottom beachbreak alongside the Pismo Pier in southern San Luis Obispo County. A long, exposed stretch of sand that breaks on most swells.
Spot intel
Parking
Metered street parking along Pomeroy Avenue and the pier blocks. Paid public lots near the pier. Walk-in access to the sand.
Crowd
Moderate to thick. Surf-school clusters concentrate alongside the pier on the south side, experienced surfers spread north and south. Water runs upper-50s°F — full suits are standard.
Beginner-friendly?
Yes.
Sand-bottom beachbreak with a slow, forgiving wave shape on small-to-medium days and an established surf-school presence. The catches are the pier pilings, rip currents on size, and the along-shore drift — not the wave.
Lineup etiquette
Beachbreak priority is per-wave, not by lineup position. A wave already taken from the peak isn't open to paddle into. Pier pilings are a hazard — the line of travel stays clear of them.
When it's on
West through northwest groundswell with light offshore from the east through northeast. Mid-tide window.
When beginners can paddle out
Knee-high to shoulder-high on a mid or higher tide with light wind. First light runs cleanest before the pier crowd builds.
