Spot intel

Parking

Refugio State Beach day-use lot, $10. The campground gate and the day-use lot share the same entrance off the 101.

Crowd

Moderate. Family beach traffic shares the cove with the lineup. Spreads thin on weekdays; stacks on summer weekends with the campground.

Beginner-friendly?

Yes.

Soft point shape, slow takeoff, sand and cobble inside. The catches are summer crowding and water temperature, not the wave.

Lineup etiquette

Priority on a point goes to the deepest rider. The lineup is forgiving; dropping in on a wave already ridden from the peak is still the standard call-out.

When it's on

West or west-northwest groundswell with light offshore wind from the north through northeast. Mid-tide window.

When beginners can paddle out

Waist-high to shoulder-high on any light-wind morning. Smaller swells fan out across the cove with room to sit wide of the point.
